Preface

During the last two decades or so, Construction Grammar has evolved into a mature approach to linguistic analysis offering new insights in the cognitive-linguistic architecture. Particularly the seminal work of Charles Fillmore (1988), William Croft (2001), Adele Goldberg (1995, 2006) and Michael Tomasello (2003), but also Langacker's outline of a Cognitive Grammar (1997, 1991) offer an alternative to the paradigm of generative grammar. Even though constructional approaches got a positive resonance in many different countries and linguistic circles, the reception in the German scientific community has been rather reserved and eclectic, notwithstanding influential publications such as Fischer/Stefanowitsch 2006, Stefanowitsch/Fischer 2008, Wildgen 2008.

Against this background, the international conference aims at applying construction grammar approaches to linguistic analysis to both German and English. Its goal is to determine the potentials and limits of different tools and methods exploring contemporary German (and also English). The conference covers important topics in diverse areas such as language acquisition, syntax theory and grammaticalisation. A publication of selected papers is planned.
